NUR Partners with KAUST for Thermal Imaging Research

A formal research agreement with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology will expand the COMPASS baseline dataset across diverse athletic populations.

NUR and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) have entered a formal research partnership to advance the scientific foundation of the COMPASS scoring system. The collaboration will be led by KAUST's Computational Bioscience Research Center, with co-investigators from Amplifai Health's clinical science team.

The primary objective is to build the largest multi-ethnic thermal imaging baseline dataset in elite sport, spanning football, basketball, swimming, and athletics. Current COMPASS baselines are derived predominantly from male footballers; the KAUST collaboration will extend validated thresholds to female athletes and non-contact sports disciplines.

Secondary research tracks include developing machine-learning models to personalise the 0.5°C inter-limb asymmetry threshold to individual athlete physiology, and validating thermal imaging as a recovery monitoring tool alongside existing blood biomarkers.

Data collection begins Q2 2026 with the first peer-reviewed publications expected by early 2027. All anonymised datasets will be made available to the wider sports science community upon publication.
